What Is Memory Foam?

Memory Foam is made from a substance called polyurethane with additional chemicals. Memory foam is a visco-elastic material and has the following properties: Viscoelasticity; this is the property of materials that exhibit both viscous and elastic characteristics when undergoing deformation due to an increase in temperature, allowing it to fit snugly to the shape of the heat and pressure placed on it. Yes that also gave me a headache trying to comprehend it.

How has it been used and why?

It is being increasingly used in mattress construction and has been used in helmet, footwear and prosthetic design, but was originally designed to be used by American Astronauts in the 1960s to support their bodies when taking off from launch sites in an attempt to counter the huge forces placed on them. In our case it is used in the brilliant range of mattresses we have on offer. It is highly energy absorbent, incredibly soft and returns to its original shape once you remove the heat and pressure of the person on it. Memory foam works by evenly distributing the person in question’s body weight increasing comfort and making a good night’s sleep easy for you.

What is Reflex Foam?

Reflex Foam is also like memory foam but it is constructed in a different way. It is designed so that the air doesn’t escape the mattress like memory foam does, it is designed so when pressure is applied to it, it acts like water in a balloon the air doesn’t escape but is pushed sideways. Once pressure is relieved it springs back into shape.

How has it been used and why?

Due to its properties Reflex Foam is used in mattresses that are used in orthopedic practice to help correct deformities of bones or muscles as the foam provides a firm feel but it is also comfortable. Reflex foam is also used to construct extremely supportive mattresses for heavier sleepers as it does not deform as much Memory Foam does when pressure is placed on it.
