History of the Chesterfield

History of the Chesterfield

The history books tell us that the Chesterfield sofa was first commissioned around the late 17th Century by Lord Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield. A statesmen and writer, he was a trendsetter and to this day the Chesterfield Sofa is still a stylish and quality sofa. Over the years there have been several variations on the original design each having their own charm and providing the same level of excellence.

Making a Chesterfield Sofa

Originally made from leather and hard wood frame which was then filled with horse hair each Chesterfield sofa took around 60 hours to make, today the process is very much the same but made a lot more affordable with more advanced tools and materials. However all of our Chesterfields are still handmade using similar techniques and 100% genuine leather and a hard wood frame the sofas are now filled with high density foam which provides a long lasting durability.

There is plenty to choice from, the elegant high back Queen Anne Armchair or the classic low back sofa and chair; also our three and two seater sofas are also available in sofa beds. We also provide a bespoke service so you can get your perfect Chesterfield sofa made how you want it, with a wide choice of styles and leathers.
